On The Ground

Area 4 is located along the southeast corner of Yellowstone National Park. This is a large unit that is almost entirely within a designated wilderness area.

The terrain here is very rough and rugged sheep country. Trophy potential is not as good, but this is still a good hunt for a mature ram.

Terrain

The terrain is rugged with deep canyons and high elevation mountain peaks. Steep rocky drainages and heavily timbered north slopes with open grassy ridges and slopes. Bighorn sheep habitat can be located in and around the Cabin Creek and Fall Creek drainages in the northeastern corner of the unit.

  • Roughly 1328 square miles

  • 99% public land

  • Elevations from 6,500-11,500 feet

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

  • 82.6% Wilderness

Upper elevations above timberline have rocky faces with grassy patches. Mid elevations are heavily timbered with subalpine fir, Douglas fir, lodgepole pine, whitebark pine and limber pine slopes with some open grass-covered hillsides. Grasses in this area include wheatgrass species and other native cool season bunch grasses. Lower elevations have a mixture of rolling sagebrush hills, grasslands and pine pockets. Creek and river bottoms are covered in willows, shrubs, grasses, forbs, sedges and timber pockets.

Access for this area is provided by horseback or foot travel only. There are well-established pack trails throughout the hunt area. There is no motorized access located here. The South Fork Road running southwest out of Cody ends in pack trails that allow some access into sheep country. A good map and GPS with land ownership and wilderness boundaries overlaid are recommended.

  • ATVs are not required

  • No motorized access within the wilderness area

  • Good pack trails are located in most drainage bottoms

Cody has hotels, campgrounds, gas stations, markets, restaurants, bars and a sporting goods store. Try the Rib and Chop House for a good meal. Hunting in Area 4 is going to be done by horseback or extreme backpack style hunting. Guides and outfitters typically operate wall tent hunting camps in the backcountry. Camping is allowed on most public lands.
