On The Ground

Located in the west-central part of the state, this hunt area is comprised of badlands, ranch lands and riparian creek bottoms. The area has a mix of public and private lands as well as the Kirk Inberg/Kevin Roy Wildlife Habitat Management Area and the Spence/Moriarity Wildlife Habitat Management Area.

This small herd of sheep is concentrated along the Wind River, at the confluence of the East Fork of the Wind River. Sheep spend time in the local badlands as well as agriculture fields along the river. Rams may also be found at the northern end of the area where it adjoins the Shoshone National Forest. Hunters with this tag may also hunt Area 5 beginning October 1st.

Terrain

This area spans from the valley floor along the Wind River and U.S. Highway 26/287, north to the Shoshone National Forest. The habitat resembles more of a Desert Bighorn Sheep environment than true bighorn sheep habitat. Mostly easy to moderate terrain throughout.

  • Roughly 135 square miles

  • 43% public land

  • Elevations from 6,500-8,300 feet

Badlands habitat together with rolling sagebrush dotted hills make up most of the unit. Riparian habitat near river-bottoms with cottonwood and willows mixed in. Agriculture fields of alfalfa and other crops draw the sheep from the badlands during the day. Along the forest boundary the foothills are covered in fir and aspen trees.

Public access in this unit is good, but access to where the sheep spend most of their time is difficult. Several drivable roads cross the unit. Multiple roads closed to vehicle access provide easy foot access to most parts of the unit. Day hunting is the norm here but backpack hunting is possible.

  • ATVs may be useful

Dubois is the closest town of any size, and offers many options for lodging. Some motels include Black Bear Inn, Super 8 Motel, Rocky Mountain Lodge and Trails End Motel. Groceries, gas, and other amenities are available as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location.
