On The Ground

Comprised of an uprising of mountains from the desert floor, this hunt area contains a mix of public and private land. This area includes the extremely rugged Ferris Mountains and more moderate Seminoe Mountains.

The low level mountains contain rocky limestone cliffs and a lot of habitat for a struggling sheep herd. Recent burns have helped reduce conifer encroachment and created more usable grasslands.

Terrain

This area spans from the lowest elevation at Alcova Reservoir, southward across high rocky desert terrain to the timbered Ferris Mountains and brushy Seminole Mountains, then back to high desert toward the city of Rawlins. Sheep are found in the Ferris and Seminoe Mountains. There are a lot of rocky outcroppings of limestone and deep secluded canyons for sheep to hide in. The southern edge of the Ferris Range consists of vertical cliffs.

  • Roughly 1245 square miles

  • 71% public land

  • Elevations from 5,400-10,000 feet

The Ferris Mountains consists of mostly timbered slopes mixed with open areas dominated by sagebrush, grass, and mountain shrubs. Timber stands consist of Douglas fir, subalpine fir, spruce, lodgepole pine, limber pine and aspen.

Public access in this area is good. It contains several well maintained roads and a network of BLM roads and smaller 2-tracks. The Ferris Mountains are the toughest to access, but possible with 4-wheel drive or ATVs. Plan on some hiking to access the sheep.

  • ATVs are recommended

  • North Ferris Road, County Road 497 and County Road 351 are the main roads

Rawlins and Casper are the closest towns of any size, and each offer different options for lodging. Some motels in Rawlins are the Holiday Inn Express, Best Western, Hampton Inn and Pronghorn Inn & Suites. Some motels in Casper are the Hampton Inn, Quality Inn, Super 8 and La Quinta. Groceries, gas, and other amenities can be found in these towns as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location.

  • Alcova Reservoir, Pathfinder Reservoir and Seminoe Reservoir all have public campgrounds
