On The Ground

Located northeast of the town of Lovell, this area is bordered by the Big Horn River on the west, the Montana State line on the north, the Sheep Mountain Road on the east and U.S. Highway 14-A on the south. It contains a lot of public land and parts of the Big Horn National Forest.

Most sheep are found off of National Forest ground on a mix of BLM and the private Moss Ranch along Devil Canyon. Recent transplants from Montana and Oregon have improved genetic diversity as well as ram size.

Terrain

This unit overall has moderate rolling hills. It turns rugged and steep when you get near canyons, Devil Canyon being the main one.

  • Roughly 227 square miles

  • 90% public land

  • Elevations from 3,700-9,800 feet

Sagebrush, grasslands, cedars and conifers make up most of the sheep habitat. Sheep can sometimes be found on the irrigated fields of the Moss Ranch. Some of the canyons have willows and other riparian habitat. Further up on the forest, it is mostly timbered.

Public access to sheep country in this unit is difficult without permission from the Moss Ranch. Roads are very rough coming from the south across BLM and Devil Canyon, and also down from the Forest. You can hunt these rams without paying a trespass fee to the Moss Ranch, but it would be well worth the money to do so for access.

  • ATV or tire chains are recommended

  • BLM Road 1130 or Forest Road 104 are your main access roads

Lovell offers a lot of options for lodging. Some motels are the Western Motel, Econo Inn and Horseshoe Bend Motel. Groceries, gas, and other amenities can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. If you pay a trespass fee on Moss Ranch, you may stay in one of their remote rustic cabins.
