On The Ground

Comprised of mountains in the Shoshone National Forest in the west-central part of the state. This area contains a lot of public land and the eastern portion lies within the Fitzpatrick Wilderness Area in the Wind River Mountain Range.

Sheep tend to stay above timberline until snowfall moves them down. Horses can be beneficial for this hunt, but not critical. Good rams can be found with hard work.

Terrain

This area spans from the valley floor along the Wind River and U.S. Highway 26/287, south and west across a portion of the Wind River Mountain Range to the Continental Divide. It contains more moderate sheep terrain, except the portion within the designated wilderness area. The area is heavily timbered on the west and gradually becomes more rugged and remote to the east with timberline occurring about 10,500 feet.

  • Roughly 391 square miles

  • 90% public land

  • Elevations from 6,800-13,300 feet

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

  • 23.1% Wilderness

The country near timberline is made up of thick spruce and fir forests with some white bark pine with grassy meadows and ridges. Sheep feed on a variety of sedges and bunch grasses in the alpine basins and around rocky scree fields. Middle elevations have Douglas fir and aspen.

Public access in this area is excellent. It contains several well maintained roads and a network of hiking and horseback trails. Packing in with horses is possible, but backpacking and even day hunts are possible. The unit is small and most areas that hold sheep are only a few miles from roads or trailheads.

  • ATVs may be useful and can get you to Union Peak

  • Devils Hole trail, Warm Springs Trail, Jakeys Fork Trail and Ross Lake Trail are the main trails to access sheep country

Dubois is the closest town of any size, and offers a few options for lodging. Some motels include Black Bear Inn, Super 8 Motel, Rocky Mountain Lodge and Trails End Motel. Groceries, gas, and other amenities are available as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location.

  • Pinnacle Campground west of Dubois is the only designated campground within the unit
