Quick Tips

  • Be cautious of bears when camping
  • Rugged physically demanding backcountry hunt
  • Several lakes and rivers with fishing opportunities

On The Ground

A large portion of this hunt area is located in designated wilderness northwest of Cody. Goat habitat is rough, steep and can be a physically demanding hunt.

Likely not the place to hunt for a high scoring trophy billy, but this can be a good hunt for a mature goat with a nice hide in some beautiful country. A two month long season will give hunters more than enough time to find and take a goat.

Terrain

Goats in this hunt area are typically found in the rough high elevation terrain of the North Absaroka Wilderness. Canyons in this area can be very deep and hunters need to be ready for steep elevation drops. Most of the goat habitat in this unit is between 10,000 and 12,000 feet in elevation and mountain goats will be found above tree line in steep cliffy areas.

  • Roughly 1045 square miles

  • 91% public land

  • Elevations from 5,200-12,000 feet

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

  • 51.7% Wilderness

Mountain goats are typically found above timberline and in terrain that is very steep and rocky with limited vegetation. Timberline is typically at 10,000 feet. Spruce, pines and firs grow densely below alpine tundra in rugged, rocky ridges and peaks. Middle elevations have firs, aspen and grassy meadows mixed with sagebrush.

Highway 20 running west toward Yellowstone National Park out of Cody serves as the southern boundary of the unit. Several short roads branch from it and head north into the unit. Off of highway 296, the Sunlight Road running into the unit to the west can also serve as a jump off point to scout and hunt. Hunting is likely to be done by backpacking or horseback.

  • There is designated wilderness in the unit that will require nonresidents to have a guide to hunt

Cody is located approximately 25 miles southeast of the hunt area. It has several hotels, campgrounds, gas stations, markets, restaurants, bars and a sporting goods store.
