On The Ground
Area 40 is a very large area located in parts of Uinta, Lincoln and Sweetwater county. The beautiful open spaces of this area can provide hunters with a great hunt with a chance at a trophy bull.
This area has fair public access, with difficulty navigating such a large vast unit, full of prairie and sagebrush. Most bull moose are 34-40” wide
Terrain
This unit consists mostly of open prairie with a lot of sagebrush. However, there are places among this unit that moose will inhabit. Some rocky canyons are present as well as small isolated mountains. Moose range at lower elevations making this hunt less physically demanding.

Vegetation
There are a lot of prairie lands with sagebrush, which do not commonly hold a lot of moose. Junipers, pines, serviceberry bushes and aspen are where the moose seek cover and shade. This along with river bottoms sheltered by willows are where moose are typically found.
Access
Access to public land in this unit is decent, though there are some privately owned land barriers to watch for. Expect to utilize numerous dirt roads, as well as spot and stalk tactics along rocky trails or through sagebrush. Hunting by use of vehicle is common in this area in order to cover such open grounds.
Camping and Lodging
There are not many designated camp grounds, however camping is permitted on most public land. Further accommodations, services or supplies can be found in one of the many nearby towns.
