This unit is made up of scenic mountains in the Bridger-Teton National Forest near the western edge of the state. There is a small part of the Gros Ventre Wilderness Area here.
This area is rugged and steep near the forested parts of the unit, with elk usually found all over. This is a smaller-sized unit with some good country to hunt, and is a good place for hunters to take branch-antlered bulls.
This unit goes from the Green River valley floor to the mountaintop divide on the west and north. Terrain is more gently contoured at lower elevations, but becomes steep and rugged in higher elevations, with timberline at about 10,000 feet.
Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.
Low and middle elevations have grassy and sage-covered meadows and hills with Douglas fir and aspen. Higher up near timberline, the country has thick spruce fir forest, with intermittent grassy slopes and meadows, rough ridges and sedge-filled alpine basins.
Public access in this unit is good off of the Union Pass Road, or the Flying A Ranch Road. There are some maintained side roads and several secondary logging roads. This unit is covered by a very large trail system. Packing in with horses or backpack hunting is possible, but day hunts are more common. This area is bordered by U.S. Highway 189 and the divide between the Hoback River and Green River on the west. The Hoback Rim can be found on the north, with Union Pass Road and Wyoming Highway 352 on the east, and U.S. Highway 191 on the south. There is a small part of the Gros Ventre Wilderness Area here. Some popular trailheads in this unit will be Sawmill Park, Miner Creek, Whiskey Grove and Tosi Creek.
Pinedale is the closest town here, and has a lot of lodging options. Grocery stores, gas stations and other stores are also available. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. There is one designated campground here. Hunters can also camp in remote locations.
