On The Ground
This large unit is located on the far east side of the state and along the Nebraska and South Dakota state lines. Low densities of elk are found here and public land is in short supply. This unit is massive and hunters will need to cover a lot of ground to initially locate huntable herds.
Low densities of elk are found in this massive unit and hunters may struggle to location huntable populations at times.
Terrain
This unit reaches from the South Dakota state line, west across the desert to Units 3, 7, 122, 113 and 123. Some of the land here is easy to hike through, but becomes steep and more rugged in the hills and breaks. Glassing and covering the unit by foot and vehicle will be important and necessary to initially locate herds.
Roughly 5343 square miles
18% public land
Elevations from 3,600-5,700 feet

Public access in this unit is good, with a lot of well-maintained roads and a network of BLM roads and smaller two-track roads. When hunters get off of the maintained roads, four-wheel drive or ATVs are recommended.
Camping and Lodging
Lusk and Newcastle are the closest towns to the unit and offer several options for lodging. Groceries, gas and other stores can also be found here. Camping is allowed on all public land for up to 16 days in one location and is often the route most hunters will go.
