On The Ground

This area has a lot of scenic rolling hills and grassy valleys found in and around the Moskee area of the Black Hills National Forest which is located in the northeast part of the state. It is bordered by U.S. Highway 16 and Wyoming Highway 116 on the south and west. Interstate 90 is to the north with the South Dakota State Line, Forest Roads 863 and 807 on the east. Overall, public land distribution is low in this unit and hunters without private access could find themselves struggling to find huntable locations without pressure.

A unit of moderate terrain with elk located throughout, this is a large unit with plenty of country to hunt but much of this area is private. Private land is best for big bulls.

Terrain

This unit reaches from the flatter prairie country near Sundance, and south all the way to the rougher country near Newcastle. There are several large ranches in the unit. The terrain in this area is very broken with many ridges and timbered slopes breaking up the expansive prairie lands. Glassing will be important to locating herds but hunters should also be prepared to walk into the many hidden areas where elk can find security.

  • Roughly 880 square miles

  • 23% public land

  • Elevations from 4,100-6,400 feet

The higher elevations here consist of ponderosa pine and mixed-grass prairie. Lower elevations have more ponderosa pines, bur oak, aspen, sumac and chokecherry.

Public access in this area is good with a lot of maintained county roads throughout the unit, as well as several secondary roads. Getting permission to hunt on private land can be hard but is the shortest route to success

Sundance and Newcastle are the closest towns, and have a lot of options for lodging. Grocery stores, gas stations and other amenities can also be found here. Camping is allowed on all public land for up to 16 days in one location, a popular option for visiting hunters.
