On The Ground

This unit is found in the south-central portion of the state and features a good offering of public lands and a small, but healthy, herd of elk. Most of this area is high plains desert with scattered timber patches on some of the northern facing slopes and creek drainages. Hunting in this unit will be glassing intensive and hunters will need to be prepared to cover some ground in search of elk.

Hunters can expect moderate to rugged terrain with elk typically found in the higher sage brush ridges and deeper draws of the Atlantic Rim and Miller Hill. This unit is big and has a lot country to hunt on. Elk are usually found in the southeast part of the unit, but can be hard to find.

Terrain

This unit is largely composed of high plains desert which consist of large expanses of prairie grasses that are broken and varied by many coulees, draws, and large ridgelines. The Atlantic Rim in the southeast offers a high elevation plateau with step and timbered ridges coming off this and leading into the prairie below. This area is largely open and barren at first glance but hunters will be surprised at the amount of terrain available here.

  • Roughly 575 square miles

  • 51% public land

  • Elevations from 6,700–8,500 feet

Sagebrush grassland dominates most of the area, while greasewood grows along the basins and slopes. Not a lot of trees can be found in this unit in general but some period patches can be found along northern slopes and creek bottoms.

Public access in this unit is good with several well-maintained roads and a network of BLM roads and smaller two tracks. When off of the maintained roads, four-wheel drive or ATVs are recommended. Most hunters will find little issue in physically traversing most of this area but there are some times where some physical exertion will be necessary.

Rawlins is the closest town, and offers a lot of options for lodging. Groceries, gas stations and other stores can also be found here. Camping is allowed on all public land for up to 16 days in one location and many hunters will opt to go this route.
