Located near the western edge of the state and made up of high plain desert and a portion of the mountainous Bear River Divide, this area includes expansive amounts of BLM and State lands. Hunters will find small and scattered populations of elk in this unit and success rates tend to be lower here than in some surrounding units.
Low densities of elk are found in this unit and success rates tend to be lower than surrounding units. Good hunting can be found but hunters will need to work hard to find success.
The western edge of the unit is composed of long-running drainages that are typically timbered in the bottoms and near water sources. Most of the ridge tops are open and rolling and many have driveable roads. Elevation gain ad loss here is not as significant as some of the surrounding units but physical preparation will still be important. Most of the eastern half of the unit is open prairie ground but still features a lot of terrain variations.
Public access is good and several well-maintained roads, a network of BLM roads and smaller 2-tracks can be found here. Most roads found here are well maintained, but a few are passable only with four-wheel-drive vehicles or ATVs. Day hunts are more common in this unit. The area is bordered by the Utah state line on the west, Wyoming Highway 89 and U.S. highway 30 on the north, and Interstate 80 on the south. This is a high desert country unit. Low and middle elevations are made up of a mix of grassy and sage covered plains with long ridges and valleys. Higher elevations have mountain shrub lands and grasslands.
Kemmerer and Evanston are the nearest towns to the unit and offer several options for lodging, groceries, gas, sporting goods and other amenities. Camping is allowed on all public land for up to 16 days in one location, a common option for most hunters.
