On The Ground

This area mainly consists of BLM land, tracts of private lands and the Medicine Bow National Forest. Hunters can find good bucks in the low benches and sagebrush draws that are common here. Whitetails are usually found on private land in this area.For nonresidents, this area is part of Region W and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 100, 131.

This area has great numbers of mule deer, with large bucks harvested regularly in all portions of the area. Whitetails can be found throughout the unit but are concentrated in the western portions. Deer can be found watering at Savery Reservoir and Savery Creek above and below the reservoir.

Terrain

The land in this area is made up of rolling hills of BLM land with portions of private ranch lands in the west of the unit. Conifer forests in the south and east of the unit have great numbers of deer. Juniper trees are found throughout the unit and mule deer can usually be seen near them.

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

  • 3.1% Wilderness

Short grass prairie and cottonwood trees cover the unit in the north and conifer forests with willow-lined creeks dominate the southern and western portions. Whitetails can typically be found near the creeks and river bottoms below 8,500 feet.

This area usually has great designated public access. There are several private land tracts within this area. Roads are marked with BLM, National Forest and county signs. Wind and early snowstorms can make vehicle access hard.

Hunters can camp remotely on the BLM and National Forest lands. Lodging can be found north of the unit in Encampment and Saratoga.
