On The Ground

Hunt area 61 is located in South Eastern Wyoming south of Interstate 80, north of the Colorado State Border, east of highway 287 and west of Highway 223. This area is known for excellent success rates of harvest with quality bucks taken every year. The terrain allows for hunters to glass a lot of area from good vantage points. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region J and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 59, 64, 65.

Good habitat should produce excellent horn growth and trophy potential here. Bowhunting is great for this area because of low hunting pressure.

Terrain

Long deep canyons, sage brush flats and prairie grass. A majority of the unit is private land with walk in and Hunter Management Areas. A small section of National Forest lies just east of Laramie. Mound Mountain and Saddleback Mountain provide some of the highest peaks in the unit.

  • Roughly 339 square miles

  • 14% public land

  • Elevations from 6,100-8,600 feet

Most of the area is dominated by sage brush and prairie grass. In the northwestern part of the unit the mountains are dominated by conifer forests, willow and aspen-lined creeks and streams.

A lot of private land with a section of National Forest can be found here. Most roads are marked with county and National Forest signs.

  • ATVs and UTVs are helpful in areas that are allowed

  • Wet conditions make for slick roads

Some hunters will camp remotely on the National Forest land in the unit with no permit required. Lodging and multiple motels can be found to the northwest side of the unit in Laramie and northeast of the unit in Cheyenne.
