On The Ground
This unit is south and west of Sundance with parts of Thunder Basin National Grasslands, Black Hills National Forest and BLM land mixed with a lot of private land. Mule deer and whitetails are commonly found here. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region A and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6.
Public land access is typically landlocked behind private ranch gates. This unit has more whitetails than mule deer. Animals can be found near ponderosa pines, along creeks bottoms and close to crops. With mule deer bucks usually in the shorter grass, sagebrush and rugged drainages on prairies.
Terrain
The Inyan Kara Mountain here rises over most of the surrounding area at roughly 6,000 feet. Creeks bottoms, rugged ridges, draws and rangeland can make it hard for spot and stalk hunters.
Roughly 365 square miles
13.4% public land
Elevations from 4,268-6,368 feet
Vegetation
Short grasses, buffalo and blue grama, along with sagebrush cover the most of the rangelands. Cottonwoods and willows can be found next to the drainages and dense stands of ponderosa pines near the ridges.
Access
Hunters should contact the Casper Regional Office to find out more about getting access to public land here. Hunters should plan to secure permission to access private land before buying a license. During cold weather, four-wheel-drive is recommended on all secondary roads. Land patterns are very complex since federal, state and private land is all mixed together.
Camping and Lodging
There are no developed campgrounds in Thunder Basin National Grasslands, but camping is still allowed. Moorcroft, Sundance and Upton have accommodations, services and gas stations.
