On The Ground

Unit 47 is located in north-central Wyoming, on the west slope of the Bighorn Mountains southeast of Greybull. The unit consists of lower crop lands and turns into steep canyons and cedars in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains. There is also a lot of BLM and state land here. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region R and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 41, 46, 50, 51, 52, 53

Mule deer can be found throughout the whole unit, and whitetail are mostly found in lower elevations. They can be challenging to hunt, but there is still trophy potential within the unit.

Terrain

This unit consists of a riparian river bottom on Shell Creek, Nowood River and the Bighorn River. Lower elevations are made up of sagebrush flats and deep cuts with agriculture land mixed in. As you move up in elevation, you get into rocky steep canyons, long drainages and rocky bluffs. The higher portions of this unit are extremely rugged.

  • Roughly 559 square miles

  • 79.8% public land

  • Elevations from 3,800-9,600 feet

The lower elevations consist of sagebrush flats, prairie grasses and agriculture fields. As you gain elevation, you will find ponderosa pine and juniper pockets. Hardwoods and willows can be found along the creek bottoms.

Public access is good in this unit. Public main roads and two tracks let you get into remote country by use of a four wheel drive vehicle. An ATV is extremely helpful in this unit for getting around. A GPS with private/public information is very helpful for deciphering public from private land.

  • Maps showing land ownership are recommended

  • The Medicine Lodge Wildlife Habitat Management Area could have more access

  • ATVs can also be useful

  • Wet and snowy conditions make for slick and muddy roads; four-wheel drive and tire chains are recommended for these conditions

Greybull is the closest town, and has a lot of lodging options, as well as a number of grocery stores, motels, gas stations and restaurants. Camping is allowed on BLM land and there are a few campgrounds in the area.
