On The Ground
This unit is west of Kaycee and southwest of Buffalo. The eastern portion of Big Horn Mountains can also be found inside of the unit. Mule deer and whitetail can be found here, but hunters can have a hard time accessing public land. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region Y and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 33, 163, 169.
Hunters should try to glass over a lot of bucks before setting up a stand or getting ready for a stalk. Try to get access for private land, since a lot of deer can usually be found there.
Terrain
Beartrap Creek, North and South Red Fork of the Powder River and Beaver Creek makeup drainages that carry snowmelt from the eastern slopes of the Bighorn Mountains. Hiking can be rough in this area, with rugged terrain.
Roughly 143 square miles
36.4% public land
Elevations from 5,162-8,506 feet
Vegetation
There are a lot of high prairie grasslands of buffalo and blue grama in this area, as well as high grass meadows, cottonwood, willow and juniper.
Access
Hunters can have a hard time accessing public land here since the land is split between federal, state and private land. Snow and rain can make driving on county and secondary roads hard and Gardner Mountain can only be accessed from a trailhead.
Camping and Lodging
Hunters can camp on BLM land here. Kaycee is the closest town and has limited lodging, food and gas stations. Buffalo has a more motels and restaurants, medical facilities and 24/7 gas stations, as well.
