On The Ground
This area is in Region Y and is located directly west of Buffalo. Hunters have opportunities for both mule deer and whitetail hunting. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region Y and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 24, 25, 28, 30, 32, 33, 163, 169
This is a low-density mule deer area with high-density hunter traffic. Hunters can hike to higher elevations to avoid other hunters. Hunters that gain access to private land can greatly increase their odds of taking a deer.
Terrain
The Bighorn Mountains can be rough and steep, so hunters can expect to hike long distances in rough conditions to find deer. Hiking is easier on some sections of private land and areas of lower elevations with small hills and flats.
Roughly 190 square miles
25.4% public land
Elevations from 4,600 – 10,750 feet
Vegetation
Stands of pine and fir make up the higher elevations, with some mountain mahogany on the mid to lower elevations. Mule deer can be seen foraging on curleaf mountain mahogany. Large, grassy meadows make up the bottoms with willows and cottonwoods along the creek bottoms.
Access
Public access is extremely limited with a checkerboard of state and BLM throughout the southern half. The northern half has the most access, with the Bud Love Wildlife Habitat and a large piece of State land just north of that. Both areas can be accessed using French Creek Road and Rock Creek Road.
ATVs are not needed
Most county roads are well maintained
Snow and rain can eliminate access to some areas
Camping and Lodging
Buffalo is the nearest city with accommodations like hotels, restaurants, gas stations and some grocery stores. Camping on State land is prohibited, but hunters can camp on BLM in a specific location for up to 14 days within any 28-day period. A large amount of National Forest is also available for camping.
