Located in North Central Wyoming in the Bighorn Mountains, this spot is known for good its good harvest success rates with quality bucks taken every year. A portion of the higher terrain allows for hunters to glass a lot of the area from high vantage points, and the lower country is heavily wooded with steep canyons. Most of this unit is located in the Bighorn National Forest.For nonresidents, this area is part of Region Y and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 24, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33, 163, 169.

Area 25 has been known for large numbers of both mule deer and whitetail deer. Hunters should be prepared to look over a lot of terrain to find the desired trophy.

There’s a fairly wide variety of terrain in this unit. Cloud Peak Wilderness holds all of the high country above 10,000 feet and is fairly rocky, but some alpine basins can be found. Mid to lower elevations have a lot of deep canyons, conifer forests and sagebrush flats. Private farm lands also contribute to the unit on the west side.

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

The majority of this unit consists of National Forest with private land and wildlife management areas. Most roads are marked with county and National Forest signs. Four-wheel drive and chains are recommended during late-season hunts when snow is likely.

Lower to middle elevations consist of sagebrush flats with prairie grass. The higher elevations hold nutritious grass in the summer and early season. Ranch and farm lands are located at the west end of the unit with creek bottoms, willows and cottonwood trees.

A lot of hunters will camp remotely on the National Forest land in this unit as there is no permit required to do so. Lodging at multiple motels can be located east of the unit in Buffalo and Sheridan and west of the unit in Worland and Greybull.
