On The Ground

This area is located southwest of Gillette. Public access is limited in much of the area making this a difficult area to hunt. Securing permission to access private land is highly recommended. Mule deer are the common deer species in the area. A very low number of whitetails are found here. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region C and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 17, 18, 23, 26, 29, 31.

Harsh winters have impacted this area over the greater part of the last decade. Potential for a quality mule deer buck still exists, but is challenging. Nearly all quality lands are privately owned and typically outfitted.

Terrain

The terrain is typical of eastern Wyoming. Large flats with few hills and drainages. There is very little variance in elevation across the unit.

  • Roughly 1525 square miles

  • 14% public land

  • Elevations from 4,000-6,050 feet

The open country vegetation consists of prairie grasses mixed with sagebrush flats. Very limited tree cover is found across the unit, with the majority by the Powder River along the northwestern border.

Public access is very limited across the unit. Scattered BLM property can be found in parts of the unit, with nearly all of it along the western boundary. Access to these public areas is limited to a few county roads. Be prepared to do some hiking and make sure to have a GPS unit that shows landowner boundaries. Plan to secure private property to hunt to improve your chance at success. Walk-in Area #7 is located next to public land along the western edge of the unit adjacent to Schoonover Rd. and the Powder River. This opens up an additional 4,350 acres to the public.

Gillette is located in the northeast corner of the area. It offers full accommodations with multiple options of hotels, restaurants and bars. You can also find lodging just outside the southwest corner of the unit in Midwest/Edgerton. This town of approximately 1,000 people offers 1 motel, and a few restaurants and bars. Camping is allowed on public land, but no improved camping locations are available.
