On The Ground

The Tisdale Mountain Unit can be found between Casper and Kaycee west of Interstate 25 in parts of Johnson and Natrona Counties. Public land access is difficult. Mule deer and whitetails can be found here. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region Y and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33, 163

Hunters have an opportunity to harvest a good buck if they can get access to private ranches in the area. There are not a lot of whitetails in this area, but some mature bucks can still be found.

Terrain

Tisdale Mountain has a lot of hills and rolling grass and sagebrush prairie. The South Fork of the Powder River drains the north part of the unit. The Wall, Devils Monument, Trail, Salt and the Long Canyons can make this a hard area to hike.

  • Roughly 236 square miles

  • 51.7% public land

  • Elevations from 4,718-5,850 feet

Juniper and ponderosa pine can be found on hills, ridges and mountain slopes. Canyons and creek bottoms can have some cottonwoods and willows, with grasslands of buffalo, blue grama and sagebrush taking up most of the area. Mountain shrubs are scattered throughout the area. A small number of irrigated crops can be found along the South Fork of the Powder River.

It can be hard access public land here, since there is a lot of federal, state and privately owned land. Some ranches block access to sections of BLM and state holdings, with some county and secondary roads crossing over the unit. Rain and snow can block county and secondary-road access.

  • Four-wheel drive is recommended

  • Tire chains are recommended

Hunters can camp on BLM land. Kaycee has limited motels, cafes and gas stations. Buffalo, to the north, has a bigger selection of motels, restaurants, medical facilities and 24/7 gas stations.
