On The Ground

This area is located in northwestern Wyoming, north of Forest Service Road 620, and east of Kinky Creek and Fish Creek up to the Continental Divide. The terrain helps hunters glass over a lot of land from high vantage points and this area produces some trophy class bucks every year. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region H and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 130, 138, 139, 140, 142, 149, 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 156

Large bucks can be found throughout this unit. The archery season is the best time to find bucks in bachelor groups and in summer patterns that are living in the highest draws at tree line.

Terrain

This unit has a lot of long, deep canyons that gain in elevation to high peaks on mountain ranges to the west. Pockets above tree line in the deep canyons, and around shale slides are the best places to find big bucks. Several small lakes can be found here, with bucks being seen at the lakes in the early mornings and evenings.

  • Roughly 161 square miles

  • 99.6% public land

  • Elevations from 7,100-11,300 feet

The majority of the land here is dominated by sagebrush, aspen and conifers with willows near the creeks and streams. Going above tree line, hunters can find patches of grass and conifers surrounded by rock slides.

There is a lot of National Forest land with good public access. Most roads are marked with Forest Service and county signs. Ranch land can be found in the central and eastern portions of the unit with some restricted access.

  • ATVs and UTVs are helpful

  • Four-wheel drive and chains are recommended during late-season hunts

Most hunters will camp remotely on the Forest Service land with no permit required. Lodging at multiple motels can be located to the east of the unit in Dubois.
