On The Ground

Area 124, known as Emblem, is located on the southern end of the Big Horn Basin in northwest Wyoming. This unit is close to the Bighorn Mountains which rise to the east, and also Cody which lies to the northwest a short distance. The broad, open landscape in this area holds mule deer, antelope, whitetail deer and a few random elk.For nonresidents, this area is part of Region X and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 121, 122, 123, 127

This area which is a part of Region X is a general tag and allows for the hunting of antlered deer, both mule deer and whitetails. The majority of access to whitetail habitat in Area 124 will be on private land, permission must be secured and will be difficult.

Terrain

Hunters in area 124 will find large rolling expanses of sagebrush covered hills with rocky pine and juniper covered hillsides and canyons. This is a relatively low altitude area with classic western high desert terrain. This area is largely BLM land ideally suited to mule deer. Whitetails will be found along the creek bottoms and private farm fields.

  • Roughly 501 square miles

  • 71.2% public land

  • Elevations from 4,000-5,500 feet

Creek bottoms filled with agricultural fields, cottonwoods and Russian Olive thickets give way to grassy hills and canyons covered in sagebrush, sparse pines and twisted junipers.

Access in area 124 is good. BLM land will provide many access points for hunters, though private land will be mixed in occasionally and it is the hunter's responsibility to be certain of where they are at. Private land will make up the majority of creek and river bottom land that contains healthy whitetail populations. Again hunters should plan far ahead of time to work with landowners to gain access which will be difficult and potentially impossible to get. The large amount of BLM ground should provide plenty of opportunity for those looking for a classic western mule deer hunt.

There is lodging, groceries and restaurants in Greybull, Basin, Meteetse and Cody. Some travel will be required to reach the unit from Cody and Meteetse. Camping is available on BLM ground to those not requiring the comforts of home.
