On The Ground

Located west of Thermopolis, this area has limited public land and is mostly private ranches. The Wind River Indian Reservation is also in portions of this unit and cannot be hunted. This is a limited quota area for both residents and nonresidents.

Being a limited quota area, there will be low hunter densities on this hunt. The two week season in November provides hunters a great opportunity to hunt bucks in the rut.

Terrain

Most of the unit is sagebrush flats with cuts and some steep canyons, providing a number of places for big bucks to tuck in to. Rely on your optics to pick them up. There are a number of ranches in the unit with agriculture fields that deer hang around.

  • Roughly 583 square miles

  • 14.9% public land

  • Elevations from 4,930–10,500 feet

Lower elevations consist of sagebrush flats, prairie grasses and agriculture fields. As you gain elevation you will hit conifer ridges with aspen patches and cedar trees in the bottoms. A few alpine basins can be found in the extreme high country.

This area has good public access. Wyoming Highway 170 and Upper Cottonwood Creek Road are the two main roads here. Other gravel roads and two tracks lead to some public tracts of land. A GPS with a private/public land chip will be critical for deciphering between public and private ground.

  • Maps showing land ownership are recommended

  • ATVs recommended

  • Wet and snowy conditions make for slick and muddy roads; four-wheel drive and tire chains are recommended for such conditions

Thermopolis, east of the unit, has good lodging options, as well as grocery stores, gas stations and restaurants. Camping on BLM ground is allowed unless stated otherwise.
