Quick Tips

  • The use of a maps service is highly recommended here
  • Be sure to call and check with the Wyoming Game and Fish office to ensure the hunt area is still open

On The Ground

This unit is found in the north central area of the state, right below hunting area 4. Although this area is about 50 miles long and 30 miles wide, hunters should only focus their efforts on the northwest corner of this unit. As you travel south in this unit, you will begin to run out of bear habitat. This unit traditionally only sees black bear harvests in the fall. There are currently no Grizzlies in this area.

On average, more bears are harvested in the fall in this area.

Terrain

This unit is approximately 50 miles long and 30 miles wide. Despite how big this unit it, you really only need to focus on the northwestern portion; here you will find big timber covered hills with nice open meadows scattered throughout them. As you travel further south, you will begin to transition into more open sagebrush rolling hills and farmland.

  • Roughly 1,318 square miles

  • 47% public land

  • Elevations from 4,600- 8,100 feet

This unit is mostly farm and ranch land. As you get closer to Highway 25, which serves as the eastern boundary of the unit, you will start to see the traditional Wyoming sagebrush prairie land. You will come across mountains covered in lodgepole pine in the north, and sagebrush prairies in the south.

Although there are some big chunks of BLM land, a lot of them are landlocked by ranches. Gaining permission from private landowners can lead hunters to some of the best black bear areas.

  • A maps service is highly recommended to anyone hunting this unit

This area is going to be different than most areas with National Forest land. There are a limited amount of camping areas in this unit, unless you just pick a section of BLM land and set your tent or camper up on it. Remember, in Wyoming you can’t camp overnight on state land. Accommodations and resources are available in Buffalo, as well as a gas station in Kaycee, along Highway 25.

  • Limited modern lodging

  • Limited spots to camp, limited to BLM land

  • There are no sporting goods stores in this unit
