Quick Tips
- The use of a maps service is highly recommended in this unit
- Be sure to call and check with the Wyoming Game and Fish office to ensure the hunt area is still open
On The Ground
This hunting area is found in the north central area of the state and covers a vast area that is almost 70 miles long and 55 miles wide. This unit is just south of Unit 3 and covers everything south of Highway 16 to Highway 26. There is not a lot of good bear habitat here, and the public land is very spotty. Grizzly Bears are not currently located in this hunt area.
The bear harvest is typically pretty low in this unit.
Terrain
This unit covers a lot of square miles and has many different terrain features, including: sagebrush prairies, farmlands, rolling foothills and steep mountains, with the majority of the unit consisting of sagebrush prairies filled with oils wells. On the east side of the unit, the Bighorns turn into rolling foothills. At the southern end outside of Thermopolis, you will find the Bridger Mountains, which are very open and have limited timber.
Roughly 2,934 square miles
65% public land
Elevations from 4,100-8,800 feet
Vegetation
This unit is mostly sagebrush prairies full of oil wells, with farms and ranches lining the rivers and streams. The Bridger Mountains are fairly open, with small patches of juniper trees in the draws. The eastern edge of this unit has rolling foothills full of open meadows, and thick timber patches scattered throughout. If you decide to hunt this unit, focus on the eastern boundary, as far north and as close to the Bighorns as you can get.
Access
This unit can be deceptive if you look at the amount of public land available. There is a lot of BLM land here in big chunks. The problem is, all of the BLM land is located in areas where bears don’t live. Your best bet at find a bear is going to be in the foothills of the Bighorns, on the eastern portion of the unit. However, there is a limited amount of public access on this eastern portion. There are small sections of BLM and state land scattered throughout private land. The Hazelton Road runs north to south along the eastern boundary. This road will provide the best access to bear country.
A maps service is highly recommended to anyone hunting this unit
Camping and Lodging
This area is going to be different than most areas with National Forest land. There are very limited camping areas in this unit unless you just pick a section of BLM land and set your tent or camper up on it. Remember, in Wyoming you can’t camp overnight on state land. Accommodations can be found in Ten Sleep and Thermopolis, which are both quite a ways away from any respectable hunting areas.
Limited modern lodging
Limited spots to camp, limited to BLM land
There are no sporting good stores in this unit
