On The Ground

This area is located in the Green River region in the southwest corner of Wyoming. This is a large unit managed for small numbers of antelope that offers hunters an enjoyable hunt in Wyoming.

In the past this area has produced some good bucks, but it is not the norm. Hunting and finding large bucks can be difficult with weather causing the antelope to migrate to winter ranges. Small numbers of antelope.

Terrain

Terrain in this area varies from vast prairie type flats to a couple of areas of high elevation where the Wyoming range ends at lower elevations. Hunters can experience diversity in the terrain with deep canyons, ravines and lots of places to find elevation to glass for antelope. Vast valleys of sage, grass and wide-open Wyoming landscapes give antelope lots of habitat and hunters areas to pursue them. The east side of the unit is high country and is made up of large canyons and high mountain meadows.

  • Roughly 943 square miles

  • 75.7% public land

  • Elevations from 6,500-9,100 feet

Hunters will find a very diverse range of vegetation throughout the unit. Grass and sage are the main plants in the valleys and aspen and mixed conifer with meadow areas can be found in the higher elevation areas. Some of the higher elevation areas offer lots of water and viewing areas.

Hunters will find a variety of access roads and areas to travel throughout the unit. Roads vary from well-maintained gravel roads to rarely travelled two track type roads. Highway 30 runs along part of the west side of the unit. A well maintained road 232 runs through the center of the unit giving good access. Roads can be traveled using most vehicles, but a high clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. Some roads in the unit can become impassible with weather, so be prepared for challenging driving conditions. An ATV or side-by-side vehicle can be used to navigate the unit quickly.

Lodging options can be found in Kemmerer, Cokeville and Montpelier for those looking for hotel accommodations. If hunters want to camp there are numerous areas for dispersed camping. A couple of campgrounds can be found in the center of the unit at higher elevations like Lake Alice and Hobble Creek as well as Allred Flat campground on the north end of the unit.
