On The Ground
Located in the Pinedale region in the west center of Wyoming, this is a good unit to hunt antelope, with lots of tags and two season dates to choose from. This area has more mountainous terrain than other Wyoming antelope units but still offers an enjoyable hunt for hunters that draw the tag and search hard for the possibility of a Boone and Crockett antelope.
Recent drought conditions in this region have hurt horn and population growth. Private property is intermixed with public land and can restrict access, but there is a lot of public land to search for a good antelope. High numbers of antelope can be found here.
Terrain
This area is made up of rolling hills, ravines, drainages on the south end and higher elevations and more terrain as hunters move to the northern parts of the unit. Hunters can find numerous roads to travel, areas with water and lots of antelope to pursue. The high elevations allow access to plenty of areas to glass for antelope.
Roughly 1,309 square miles
80.7% public land
Elevations from 7,200-12,200 feet
Wilderness
Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.
37.6% Wilderness
Vegetation
The main vegetation in this area are grasses, sage and some rabbit brush. The south end of the unit has open sage throughout while the north has a lot of forest areas with sage basins. Much of the unit is high elevation which includes grass flats intermixed with mixed conifer timber stands.
Access
Access in some areas is limited due to private property. Some areas on the southeast are hard to access because they are islands of public land surrounded by private property. An ATV or side-by-side vehicle can be helpful for traveling through the unit quickly. Highway 191 runs along the east edge of the unit and Highway 352 gives some access to the interior areas where antelope can be found.
Camping and Lodging
Accommodations can be found in the nearby towns of Pinedale and Boulder. There are a few developed campgrounds that can be found at Willow, Fremont, Half Moon and Boulder lakes. Primitive or dispersed camping can be found throughout the unit on public land.
