On The Ground

Area 8 is located on the eastern border of the state, south of Newcastle. Made up of high plains desert and some forested hills, this unit is mostly private land checkerboarded with BLM and State lands. Public land hunters will find a few scattered options here but will need to very flexible and committed in order to find success. Typically, the best odds for success will be found on private lands.

Public land hunters may struggle some here at times with the lack of access options but some success can be found through hard work.

Terrain

This unit, like other surrounding units, consists of a variety of grassy or desert-like open prairie with large creek bottoms and rolling hills that provide excellent opportunities for stalking antelope. Physically covering ground will be straightforward and generally easy for most hunters. The open terrain here lends itself to good glassing opportunities.

  • Roughly 1,122 square miles

  • 19.2% public land

  • Elevations from 3,600–4,700 feet

The area is open, high desert prairie covered in sagebrush or grasslands. Rocky bluffs, sagebrush, cedars and small trees can be found in the Buck Creek and Old Woman Creek Hills.

Good public access in this area is provided by well-maintained highways, county roads and rougher two-track roads. The area is bordered by County Roads 54, 1A and 2 on the north, the South Dakota state line on the east, County Roads 53, 23 and 18 and Wyoming Highways 270 and 271 on the south and Wyoming Highway 272 and County Roads 14, 39 and 7A on the west.

Newcastle is the closest town to the unit and offers many options for lodging, groceries, gas and other amenities. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. Hunters can also camp in remote locations throughout the unit.
