On The Ground

Area 72, also referred to as West Poison Spider is located in the central part of the state west of Casper. Comprised of high plains desert, this unit contains good amounts of BLM and State lands for the public land hunter. There are good Walk-In Areas that allow hunters to hunt on private land and these may be great options to check into.

This area has decent general access to public land and a high success rate for harvest. This is a large area with enough public land to glass for bucks and find opportunities.

Terrain

This area, like other surrounding areas, consists of a variety of grassy or desert-like open prairie, with large basins, deep creek bottoms and rolling hills that provide opportunity for stalking. Physically covering ground here is easy and straightforward and most hunters will find little issue in this.

  • Roughly 624 square miles

  • 46.9% public land

  • Elevations from 5,500-8,100 feet

Large open land with sagebrush and grasslands make up most of this area. Rocky bluffs, sagebrush, cedars and small trees are to be expected as the elevation climbs. The Rattlesnake Hills are rocky and sparsely timbered.

Unit 72 is bordered by U.S. Highway 20 and County Roads 201 and 210 on the north, County Road 319 on the east, the Rattlesnake Mountain divide on the south and County Road 212 on the west. Public access in this unit is decent. Poison Spider Road and Power River Road are the main access roads along with a network of BLM roads and smaller 2-track roads branching off. Most roads are well maintained, with a few passable only with 4-wheel drive or ATVs.

Casper is the closest town of any size, and offers many options for lodging. Groceries, gas, and other amenities can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location.
