On The Ground
This area is located in southeastern Wyoming north of Highway 230 and west of the town of Laramie. This area is known for its large antelope population and high success rates for large bucks. This area produces a few Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young bucks every year. A great amount of public land is found here but most of these areas are not ideal antelope habitat and will hold few animals. Most of the prime habitat has a moderate distribution of public ands and some hunter management areas.
Antelope are scattered throughout the unit but the lack of public access here can be a big challenge for most public land hunters to overcome.
Terrain
This area has a lot of long deep canyons, sage brush flats and prairie grass that lead into the mountains. A few mountain ranges provide vantage points for glassing and locating antelope herds.
Roughly 654 square miles
47.8% public land
Elevations from 7,100-10,650 feet
Vegetation
The majority of the area is dominated by sage brush, bitterbrush, juniper, pinyon and prairie grass. Getting to higher elevations the land will be taken up by conifers and aspen trees. Ranch lands dominate the east side of Unit 45 with good access to Hunter Management Areas, walk in areas and public land.
Access
Some of this area is National Forest land with good public access, along with a few ranch lands. Most roads are marked with Forest Service signs. Better public access toward the west of the unit near National Forest land.
Camping and Lodging
Some hunters will camp remotely on the Forest Service land on the unit with permits in designated areas required. Lodging at several motels can be found east of the unit in Laramie.
