On The Ground

This area can be found in the southeast part of the state northeast of Cheyenne. Made up of high plains desert and forest, this unit has a lot of private land with some BLM and state land. It is bordered by the North Platte River on the north, the Nebraska state line on the east, Interstate 80 on the south and Interstate 25 on the west.

This area does not have the best access to public land, but does have a high success rate for harvest. Using an outfitter is recommended to access private land to increase chances of success. Walk in access areas will allow public access into private lands.

Terrain

There are a lot of different types of grassy and desert-like open prairies with crop lands here. This can be a hard unit for spot and stalk. The gas and oil drilling that goes on here can open up access to roads in places all throughout the unit.

  • Roughly 2,887 square miles

  • 8.8% public land

  • Elevations from 4,000-6,100 feet

Open land with high desert prairie, sagebrush and grasslands can be found here. Some private irrigated croplands can bring in antelope from the surrounding prairies.

Public access here is not very good and it can be hard to get on public land. State highways and county roads can be found here as well as smaller two-track roads. Walk-in access areas are fairly prominent here and do allow public access into private lands.

Cheyenne and Wheatland are the closest towns, and have a lot of lodging options. Grocery stores, gas stations and other amenities can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. Hunters can also camp in remote locations.
