On The Ground
Located just east of Buffalo, this area is a great opportunity unit giving hunters a decent amount of ground to cover and good numbers of antelope. Private grounds will typically hold the biggest bucks but public land hunters who work hard can find some good opportunities.
Good numbers of antelope can be found here along with good public hunting options for those who are willing to work or it.
Terrain
The majority of terrain here is made up of large sagebrush draws, grassy ridges and valleys. The Powder River is the eastern border and within a few miles of the river hunters can expect terrain to be rougher. Spot and stalk techniques will work great here.
Roughly 665 square miles
29.3% public land
Elevations from 600-4,850 feet
Vegetation
The tops of the buttes and ridges here are mostly wind blown with light grass and rock that mix with sagebrush that can be found at all elevations. Mixed grasses and prickly pear cactus are also common throughout the area.
Access
Limited access into this unit. Most of the state and BLM can be accessed from the Tipperary and Upper Powder River Road. There is a lot peppering of BLM along the east side of I-90 across the southern border, parking along the interstate is not allowed and meant for emergencies only.
Camping and Lodging
Buffalo is the nearest city to this unit that also has accommodations. There are roughly 20 hotels here and a lot of restaurants, gas stations and grocery stores. Hunters can camp on BLM land in a specific location for up to 14 days within any 28-day period.
