On The Ground
Area 103, also referred to as Dwyer is located north of Wheatland in the southeast part of the state. Comprised of high plains desert and forest, this unit contains a good amount of parcels of National Forest, BLM and State lands. Public lands can be found, but are scattered throughout the unit and hunters will liely need to stay mobile.
This area has fair public access and public land hunters who hunt hard can find success here. Typically, the best odds for success, and the best bucks, will be found on private lands.
Terrain
This area consists of a variety of grassy or desert-like open prairie, with creek bottoms and rolling hills that provide opportunity for stalking. Gas and oil drilling activity provides access roads in places. Hunters will find plenty of glassing opportunities here along with exceptional spot and stalk opportunities.
Roughly 1128 Square miles
24.5% public land
Elevations from 4,300–10,200 feet
Vegetation
This unit contains high desert prairie with sagebrush and grasslands. Rocky bluffs, sagebrush, cedars and timber are to be expected as the elevation climbs into the National Forest in the west part of the unit.
Access
Public access in this unit is only fair. Many tracts of public land are isolated within private land. Using an outfitter is recommended. It contains a few BLM and Forest roads with some smaller 2-tracks. Most roads are well maintained, with a few passable only with 4-wheel drive or ATVs.
Camping and Lodging
Wheatland is the closest town of any size, and offers many options for lodging. Groceries, gas, and other amenities can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location.
