On The Ground

The famous Willapa Hills run through this unit diagonally, from the northwest to southeast, and are largely on Weyerhaeuser land, with a small portion on state lands in the southeast. As with this entire region, clearcutting timber activities dominate the land use, however, the steep Willapa Hills have not been clear cut, leaving excellent elk and deer habitat. This unit is definitely worth looking into because it offers good multi-species big game hunting.

This unit has a good elk hunt, and it will be worthwhile to lots of scouting.

Terrain

Walville Peak and Squally Jim form the highest points over a rather mellow rolling conifer forest that is heavily clear-cut and replanted. Road 6, along the southern border, is primarily agriculture land with more and more single-family rural properties being developed.

  • Roughly 263 square miles

  • 25% public land

  • Elevations range from 200 – 2,411 feet

The conifer forests here are highly farmed for timber and are in various stages of regrowth. Along with the timber industries, other farming industries in the area include orchards, tree farms, dairy farms and vegetables.

Between Weyerhaeuser public access programs and a large continuous tract of state land, access is fairly easy. It’s easy to focus on the big pieces of ground, however, don’t overlook the smaller sections with prime deer and elk habitat.

  • Good road system throughout entire unit, watch for seasonally locked gates

Primitive camping on the National Forest land along northern border is allowed most of the year, however, various fire bans and forest road closures may be in effect, so double check any restrictions or permits necessary prior to your trip. If you are more interested in a bed and a shower and being closer to gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store, your best options will be in Raymond.
