The Deschutes River dissects the unit diagonally, past Olympia to the Budd Inlet. Outside of the urban sprawl, there are small isolated pieces of state land, along with private rural properties, in all sizes. The largest piece of land is Fort Lewis in the eastern half of the unit. WDFW manages two subspecies of elk, with the Roosevelt elk west of I-5, running within this GMU’s borders on the western edge.
Although this unit is mostly private land, it does offer some good hunting opportunities.
This unit has been significantly touched by the hands of man. There is a thin patchwork of timber left standing from years of permanent timber cutting to make room for farming and other human based land uses. The northern portion is mostly urban sprawl which continues to grow. The remainder of the unit consists of small, privately-owned tracts of land in all shapes and sizes, largely personal use properties, from summer homes, horse properties and hobby farms.
The vegetation in this unit is a patchwork of timber and farmlands, which are largely hay meadows, and small farms growing vegetables, grains, and berries. Due to the large influx of residents, there have been a significant amount of non-native decorative trees, shrubs and flowers introduced here as well, some of which are growing feral.
The majority of access will be on private lands and can take a bit of research and legwork before the season starts. However, hunting opportunities are present for those willing to do some asking around for private land access.
There is very limited camping in this unit, however, there are endless lodging options.
