On The Ground

The Minot Peak unit is comprised largely of Weyerhaeuser land, with a triangle of DNR in the eastern edge outside of Ford Prairie. Minot Peak is located in the eastern portion and stands at 1,788-ft tall, with Blue Mountain a bit to the south at 1,749-ft. Farming dominates the northern and eastern borders in the Chehalis River valley, with timber industries using the bulk of the unit creating a patchwork of timber of all age classes.

Whichever species you hunt, this unit offers hunting opportunities on private lands.

Terrain

This unit holds rolling conifer forests that are heavily clear cut and replanted. The broad river valley consists of farmland and holds deer along the cover edges.

  • Roughly 308 square miles

  • 13% public land

  • Elevations range from 200 – 1,600 feet

Conifer forests are highly farmed for timber and are in various stages of regrowth. There are also orchards, tree farms, vegetable farms, and dairy farms in this area.

This unit is mostly private land, however, Weyerhaeuser does have a good program in place for public access.

  • Good road system throughout entire unit, watch for seasonally locked gates

  • There small spots of WA Private Lands Hunting in the farmlands worth checking out

Limited primitive camping in the National Forest is allowed for the majority of the year, but various fire bans and forest road closures may happen, so double check any restrictions or permits necessary prior to your trip. If you are more interested in a bed and a shower and being closer to gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store, your best options will be local B&B’s and hotels in Aberdeen, Montesano and Elma.
