On The Ground

This low elevation GMU runs from the city of Shelton, up Hwy 101, crosses the Hood Canal at Annas Bay, takes in the Tahuya State Forest before heading south along Case Inlet, and finally winds its way through Dana Passage and Totten Inlet to Oyster Bay, just south of Shelton. This cool forested unit has a diverse mix of public and private lands, including Green Diamond Resource Company with a public access program in place.

There are miles of coastline here, some of which offer boat access opportunities.

Terrain

Excellent rolling forests have been clear cut or developed into a patchwork of cover for blacktail. They do well in this populated area and can be found throughout the entire unit given they are close to thick cover they feel safe in. A majority of this region is low ground and subject to a bit of flooding or standing water. There are multiple timber companies that offer various public access hunting programs worth taking advantage of.

  • Roughly 361 square miles

  • 13% public land

  • Elevations range from Sea Level – 500 feet

Rolling timber forests have been heavily clear-cut, replanted, and are now in various stages of regrowth or are being used as farms and commercial properties. The various protected inlet coasts are popular for residential properties with a view.

Although there are some sizeable tracts of public land in the northern region, be sure to scout the unit and key in on the right hunting location to fit your style. With various public access opportunities on private land, hunters have a variety of options and can have a great hunting experience.

  • Secure private land access early

  • Use your GPS so you know your hunting boundaries

There are very few public camping options in this unit. Lodging, gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store can be found in Shelton.
