On The Ground

Coyle is an interesting unit located along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, wrapping around the Puget Sound. With this unit being mostly coastal and its highest point at a mere 800-ft, the elk are limited to small land parcels which are typically pastures. Small fragmented pieces of public are scattered throughout the unit and do not hold any resident big game, only the game that cruises through from time to time. Port Angeles is located in the very northwestern portion.

Tribal hunting does occur, so actual hunting pressure may be greater the WDFW hunting statistics might suggest. It can be hard to find elk in this unit.

Terrain

This unit has tidal flats along the Salish Sea and Puget Sound, with much of the higher key real estate

developed into urban sprawl, agriculture properties and single-family residential acreages. The highpoint in this unit is only 800-ft and represents one small hill -the bulk of the unit is 500-ft or less. Larger tracts of land include private companies, state land, state park, and reservations.

  • Roughly 905 square miles

  • 4% public land

  • Elevations range from Sea Level – 800 feet

The vegetation here consists of rolling timber forests, which have been heavily clear-cut and replanted, and tidal saltwater flats along the coast. The thick canopy of cover makes excellent deer habitat. Non-native plants have a stronghold within this ecosystem and outnumber many of the native flora.

Although there are some small parcels of public, private land will provide you with the lowest hunting pressure in the unit and a chance at a harvest.

  • Secure private land access early

  • Use your GPS to know your hunting boundaries

There are very little public camping options in this area. You can find lodging, gas stations, restaurants, and groceries in the towns of Port Angeles and Sequim in the north, and Port Townsend on the peninsula.
