On The Ground

This long horizontal unit lays between the Salish Sea and Lake Crescent in the Olympic National Park. The eastern edge is the Elwha River and Road 113 in the west which encompasses a fair portion of state land and Olympic National Forest. The eastern portion is urban sprawl which quickly fades into forests as you move westward.

Apply for deer farm limited access permit.

Terrain

Mount Muller at 3,864-ft to Snider Peak at 2,956-ft forms a long steep ridgeline in the National Forest, north of Hwy 101. The north side quickly drops to more rolling hills before eventually reaching the sea. The far eastern point is populated with single-family homes giving way to urban sprawl at Port Angeles.

  • Roughly 240 square miles

  • 53% public land

  • Elevations range from Sea Level – 3,684 feet

This unit has thick lush cover with cleared lands of various sizes. Clearcuts are typically replanted by timber companies, and there are also multiple single-family residential properties in this area. Tidal flats and marshland are common as elevations rise just a few hundred feet above sea level.

There is public access, however, applying for Tree Farm access permits is important unless you already have a spot scouted. There is a vast difference in the number of roads between public and private land, however, there are a significant amount of locked gates on the private.

  • Secure private land access early

  • Check into Tree Farm access permits

This is basically a day hunt unit. Primitive camping in the National Forest is allowed during most of the year, various fire bans and forest road closures may happen, so double check any restrictions or permits necessary prior to your trip. Some overnight camping may be allowed on certain Rayonier access permits as well. If you are more interested in lodging and being closer to gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store, your best options will be in the towns of Port Angeles and Challam Bay.
