On The Ground
This large unit is located along the Columbia River and the I-5 corridor from Longview/Kelso in the north, past Woodland and Battle Ground to Vancouver. This unit is largely urban sprawl and farming with very little in the way of public land.
The eastern and northeastern borders offer the best big-game habitat, however, it’s highly divided into small private pieces of land with many residential homes which is exactly why it’s a Firearms Restriction GMU.
Terrain
There are rolling hills with intermittent timber where it has not been cleared for other uses, largely agriculture and single-family residential acreages. The largest portion of the GMU is a human expansion from the various cities and towns along the Columbia River and Portland, OR across the river.
Roughly 538 square miles
5% public land
Elevations range from 100– 2,000 feet
Vegetation
Douglas fir forests sit on the gentle mountains to the east and northeast, highly touched by the hand of man, and quickly transitions into rangeland, farmland and rural single-family residencies with a mixture of native and non-native trees, bushes, flowers and grasses. Farmland holds berries, grains, Christmas trees and nurseries. Cattle, sheep and dairy are common livestock in these areas. The Columbia River valley is highly developed and contains numerous wetlands and ponds mixed within marinas and large commercial docks.
Access
There is very little public access and the best hunting experience is found on private lands.
Know your boundaries for hunting and retrieving game
Watch for trails closed to motor vehicles
Camping and Lodging
There are limited public camping spots within the unit and many lodging options in this urban landscape.
