On The Ground

This is a smaller unit that is substantially private land with small blocks of state ground. The good news is, there are large tracts of public access via the Feel Free to Hunt and Hunt by Written Permission programs, along with some smaller tracts within the unit. What makes this different from other units is wind power and the special rules when hunting these wind farms to ensure the safety of the hunters. Those interested in hunting the wind farms must complete a form online, contacts can be found on the WDFW website. The deer hunt can be decent, especially on the right piece of private ground. Pre-planning, access and scouting play a pivotal role in hunter experience and success.

Terrain

Farming and ranching dominate this dry land with large tracts of tilled farm ground. Vast wind farms stand tall on the plateau. Small creeks and the Tucannon River cut through the terrain, providing the only variance to the landscape and vital water seeps, buck brush, berries, cover and browse for the wildlife.

  • Roughly 151 square miles

  • 5% public land

  • Elevations range from 1,200– 3,000 feet

The northwest region is dry scabland and prairie with various dryland grasses and tilled dryland farming for various cereal grains. The Tucannon River, along with few small creeks, provide the only surface water and run diagonally through the unit. Along the river are the only irrigated crops, as well as thick brushy cover consisting of reeds, tall bunch grass, buck brush and wildflowers in these narrow riparian strips.

You will need to do some work prior to the season in order to gain access. However, there is a decent amount of land enrolled in the Hunt by Written Permission and Feel Free to Hunt programs.

  • Plat maps and reaching out to private landowners early will be beneficial

  • Special rules apply when hunting private wind farms

Seeing as the majority of the unit is private, there are very limited camping spots here. You can find lodging, gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store in the town of Dayton.
