On The Ground

This fairly small unit is located along the west side of the Blue Mountain Range, from the Oregon border north to Waitsburg on the northwest corner. Most of the unit is private land, with very limited state ground. On the plus side, numerous landowners are enrolled in access programs via WDFW. Few old, large burns have left their mark on the unit.

Secure private land access before applying for tags.

Terrain

Farming and ranching dominate this diverse region. Large tilled farms are the main use of this fertile land throughout the unit, from the arid low ground to the mid 1,500-ft range. The foothills of the Blue Mountains consist of deep cuts ranging from open to densely forested fir and pine hill sides, making great mixed wildlife habitat, and climbing quickly to well over 4,000-ft along the unit boundary. Cattle and various crops also do fairly well in this 4-season climate.

  • Roughly 218 square miles

  • 2% public land

  • Elevations range from 1,200– 4,800 feet

The northwest region consists of dry scabland and prairie, with various dryland grasses and tilled dryland farming for various grains. The unit rises as you move southeast into the Blue Mountain foothills. Old growth fir forests top out within the unit at 4,800-ft. The 2015 Blue Creek and 2006 Columbia Complex Fires burned 154,000 acres collectively, so these areas have better, more tender, protein packed grasses and should help with the courser buckbrush burned out. Walla Walla is located at the westernmost point of the unit and is dominantly urban sprawl and farming a wide variety of crops.

Pretty much the entire unit is private, so you will need to do some work gaining access prior to your hunt as there is a lot of land enrolled in public access programs.

  • GPS to know private land boundaries is very important

There are limited camping areas as this unit is basically all private. You can find lodging, gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store in Walla Walla and Waitsburg.
