This is a large unit with a diverse mix of farm and agricultural land. A wide swath of natural shrub-steppe and riparian wetlands runs diagonally through the unit and is covered with lakes, ponds, and wetlands. Swanson Lakes Wildlife Area, state and BLM public ground also follow along this distinctive land feature. Columbia sharp-tailed grouse, mule deer and upland game birds favor this ecosystem. Throughout the unit there are other tracks of BLM and state ground providing public hunting opportunities.

Roughly half of the unit consists of various dry land agriculture crops, representing a continual menu for the local game.

This unit is very open and can be challenging to find deer in with elevation difference running a mere 700-ft. There are various farming and ranching operations that range widely throughout the area. Based on crops planted, maturity, dates and rotation, there is always some activity and certain crops deer and elk favor. The unit is relatively flat and does not drain quickly, thus creating some great mixed game riparian habitat covered with ponds of all sizes and intermittent streams.

The majority of the unit consists of dryland and irrigated farms crops ranging from wheat, cereal grains, hay, canola, barley and grass seed. Swanson Lakes Wildlife Area and diagonal swath have numerous pothole lakes and an intermittent creek. This scablands channel on the Columbia Plateau has plateaus interspersed with riparian wetlands, rangeland, old CRP fields and restored grasslands.

Access throughout most of the unit is tough, with key private lands offering the best success. Based on yearly crop rotation, the best deer and elk ground can easily rotate with crops.

There are limited camping areas in this unit. If you are interested in a comfortable bed and a shower, and being closer to gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store, your best options will be B&B’s, hotels and motels in Davenport and the small town of Wilbur. You will be close to Grand Coulee at the very northwest tip of the unit.
