On The Ground

Unit 124 lies at the northeast most region of District 2 on the eastern side of the state bordering Idaho which is comprised of 7 game management units. This unit covers several different eco systems between Idaho and the Spokane Reservation to the west. This unit has a large amount of private ground. The best portions of public ground receive the bulk of hunting pressure, so it would be a good idea to sew up private access as soon as possible. Hunting pressure decreases after the beginning of the hunt, so plan to keep on hunting.

Deer populations have fluctuated greatly due to many back-to-back events; 2014-15 drought, 2015 blue tongue which typically follows droughts, and a hard winter in 2016-17. This unit has some excellent terrain for archery elk hunters.

Terrain

The forested area along the Idaho border is the most rugged portion, and tapers off to the west and south to more mild broken private land with scattered trees, bushy valleys, creek bottoms and benches that have been cleared and left as grass for grazing livestock and hay meadows. There are a few densely wooded sections, however, they typically have a private home hidden in a small clearing within. There are also several large horse properties, ranches, and other ag related tracts of land. The most southern portion is the Spokane valley and is all urban sprawl.

  • Roughly 775 square miles

  • 8% public land

  • Elevations range from 1,400– 5,200 feet

Small tracks of ponderosa pine, fir and aspen on the eastern edge quickly giving way to land worked by man. Large clearings for livestock use and hay production in all shapes and sizes make up the bulk, leaving typical thick choked creek bottoms winding their way down stream. Orchards in the center and western part of the unit grow peaches and apricots. Whitetail live in these fringes, which can lead to private land boundary issues, and are common in the fields after dark.

Access throughout most of the unit is tough. Private lands typically offer the best success rates. You will want to secure your access before your hunt, as early as possible.

  • GPS is a key piece of equipment

  • Look into access via timber companies, Inland Empire Paper Company has a huge piece of ground along the Idaho border

This unit has limited camping options, however, there are lots of B&B and hotel options in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Newport (on the Idaho border) and Deer Park.
