Washington offers hunting opportunities for two species of elk - Rocky Mountain Elk and the Roosevelt Elk. Roosevelt elk are hunted on the western edge of the state with both over the counter and special permit hunting opportunities. This subspecies of elk generally have a larger body than their rocky mountain cousin, but the antlers generally grow much smaller. Roosevelt elk typically inhabit very thick and almost jungle-like country where glassing options will be very limited. This type of hunting can be very frustrating but the payoff can be great. Hunters generally find the best success with tree stands, still hunting timber patches, or glassing logging clear cuts during prime feeding hours.
** Units listed below may not have a current hunt for this species. Units in this table are included if a significant part of the unit is found within the county.
Hunters who are unsuccessful in drawing a special permit will be granted a bonus point
Applicants must front the application fee and the cost of an elk tag when applying
Applicants can apply as a party and are limited to 8 members
Over-the-counter tags are available
Residents and nonresidents are drawn from the same pool and both with the same odds of drawing
Typically the best dates are reserved for special permits (draw permits), but OTC tags are available for most units and areas
Bonus points are squared as a way to reward long-time applicants
