On The Ground
This unit is located in northern Utah and just south of the Great Salt Lake. Hunters will find a healthy supply of public land here which is also where the bulk of the best sheep habitat will be found. For additional options, hunters also have access to the Deseret Peak and Stansbury Mountains Wilderness areas which will provide roadless hunting opportunities. A good mixture of timber, open slopes, and cliffs are found here making for an enjoyable hunt in tough terrain.
Hunters with this tag will find themselves in beautiful country with great sheep populations.
Terrain
This area is largely flat with the exception of the Stansbury Mountains near the center of the unit. Here steep ridgelines climb for several thousand feet into large alpine basins. Most of this area is not incredible rugged but the sheer amount of elevation gain required to reach much of the sheep habitat can be very physically demanding.
70% public land
Elevations range from 4,200 - 11,000 feet
Vegetation
Low elevations in this unit have dry, desert rolling hills and flats that contain some grass, prickly-pear cactus, and sagebrush with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees. Middle elevations are covered in ponderosa pines and oak brush, while sagebrush continues through this elevation as well. Higher elevations have scattered aspen groves with steep slopes covered in conifer forests.
Access
Most of the huntable sheep terrain is found in the Stansbury mountains which are primarily comprised of publically accessible lands. Still, physically accessing most of this habitat can be physically and mentally exhausting. Hunters are encouraged to prepare physically prior to their hunt. Several trails can be found leading into the wilderness and roadless areas and are generally the best bet for any type of serious distance covering.
Camping and Lodging
A few options for modern lodging can be found on the western end of the unit in Tooele. Here, groceries and some select sporting goods can also be found but most specialty needs will likely need to be met prior to the hunt beginning. There are several campgrounds in South Willow Canyon. Camping is also allowed on most public land within the unit.
