On The Ground

Located North of Green River, this unit is one of the best Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep hunts in the state. It can be a difficult hunt, with tough rugged terrain, but the rewards are worth it.

Terrain

Located in the eastern part of the state, much of this unit is made up of high desert plateau terrain. Flat rolling ridges with creek drainages and valleys dividing them up. The Green River has carved a large canyon on the east edge of the unit.

  • Roughly 1,547 square miles

  • 72% public land

  • Elevations from 4,300-9,800 feet

Low elevations have grass, sagebrush, pinyon pines, and junipers continuing up through middle elevations. There are some cottonwoods along the river and streams. There are also patches of conifers on some of the steeper slopes at the higher elevations.

Some of the unit is part of the Desolation Canyon Wilderness Study Area, and some of it is managed by the BLM, giving good public access. There are some private sections on the tops of the plateaus. There is limited road access on all sides of the unit with only a couple of dirt roads leading to less-maintained 4-wheel drive roads or ATV trails. Some of the main access points are Nine Mile Canyon Canyon Road and the lower Horse Bench ATV trail.

  • ATVs recommended

  • 4-wheel drive recommended

  • Desolation Canyon WSA is limited to foot traffic only

Some hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good, flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. Green River is the nearest town that has lodging for hunters that prefer to stay in a hotel.
