On The Ground

Located in the Book Cliffs of eastern Utah, this unit holds healthy herds of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. It is not an easy hunt, as there is a lot of rugged terrain.

A hunter willing to put some miles in and be dedicated to finding sheep will have a chance at seeing some good rams. This area also has good public access.

Terrain

Located in the eastern part of the state, much of this unit is made up of high desert plateau terrain. Flat rolling ridges with creek drainages and valleys dividing them up. The Green River has carved a large canyon on the east edge of the unit.

  • Roughly 1,291 square miles

  • 96% public land

  • Elevations from 4,400-9,500 feet

Low elevations have grass, sagebrush, pinyon pines and junipers continuing up through the middle elevations. There are some cottonwoods along the river and streams. There are patches of conifers on some of the steeper slopes at the higher elevations.

Some of this unit is part of the Desolation Canyon and the Floy Canyon Wilderness Study Areas, giving good public access. The most commonly used access roads are Hastings Road, Tushar Canyon, Horse Canyon, and Floy canyon road. There is limited road access on all sides of the unit with only a couple of dirt roads leading to less-maintained four-wheel-drive roads or ATV trails.

  • ATVs recommended

  • Four-wheel drive recommended

  • The Wilderness Study Areas are limited to foot traffic only

Some hunters camp along roads as there are several locations that have good, flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. Swasey's Beach is the only designated campground in the unit. Most hunters will stay in Green River as it is the nearest town that has lodging.

  • Arrive early for better camping locations
