On The Ground

Hunters wanting to hunt mule deer during the rut with a muzzleloader might enjoy this unit. Located in northern Utah this hunt is dependent on winter weather to get deer moving into the area.

A limited entry unit, managed for migratory trophy bucks. This unit has decent public access. Being a weather-dependent unit, this unit needs snow for deer to migrate.

Terrain

The terrain in this unit does not have much variation. Farmland in the valley leads to rolling foothills and ridges separated by small creeks. The mountains are not extreme in elevations, but have steep creek drainages cutting through them.

  • Roughly 129 square miles

  • 41% public land

  • Elevations from 6,200-8,000 feet

Lower elevations in this unit consist of farmland leading up through rolling foothills covered in grass, sagebrush and a few scattered pinyon pine and juniper trees. Middle and higher elevations are covered in sagebrush and grass with patches of conifer trees.

There is road access on all sides of the unit with well-maintained dirt roads leading to less-maintained 4-wheel- drive roads and ATV trails. Highway 16 and 39 border the unit and have smaller roads that branch off of them into the unit. Most of the public land is managed by the BLM. The valley is primarily private farmland.

  • ATVs recommended

  • 4-wheel-drive recommended

Some hunters camp along roads. There are several locations that have good flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. Evanston, Wyoming is the nearest city with lodging and services, but is far from the unit.

  • Prepare for cold temperatures
